Nancy is a young woman of about nineteen or twenty, though she could pass for being in her mid-teens, living as a homeless person in London during the Blitz. As you might expect, she's highly resourceful and intelligent, evidenced by the fact that she's survived as long as she has.

She's also intensely compassionate and brave, and has gathered a group of homeless children (probably orphans or abandoned) around her, leading them to houses during air raids to feed them with the meals left behind when the families went to shelter, and protecting them from as many as she can of the dangers that threaten them in wartime London.

Part of this, as she admits to the Doctor during the course of canon, is brought about by her guilt - because there was one young boy, Jamie, who she couldn't save. As far as anyone knows, he was her little brother and he died when a bomb fell during an air raid. But Nancy has a secret that she's ashamed to tell anyone. There's a reason the Empty Child is stalking her, in particular, all over the city...
